The Rường house of Hue are characterized by a structure of three main compartments and two wings.

The name “Rường” is a shortened form of “rường cột” (pillars and beams). Ruong houses typically have a tightly structured design, utilizing sturdy wooden columns and beams, with a unique architectural layout based on the Đinh (T-shaped), Công (I-shaped), Khẩu (mouth-shaped), and Nội Công Ngoại Quốc (complex symmetrical) models. The roof of a Ruong house consists of two overlapping layers of tiles. Typically, Ruong houses in Hue feature three main compartments, two wings, and approximately 56 columns. Each column is firmly placed on large stone bases, ensuring the house’s durability while effectively preventing moisture and termite damage.

The roof structure of a Ruong house is built with two layers and a steep slope, making it well-suited to the region’s heavy rainfall and harsh weather conditions. The roof is typically covered with flat tiles, yin-yang tiles, or thatch. However, regardless of the material used, the roofing is always layered thickly, not only enhancing thermal insulation but also playing a crucial role in stabilizing the house’s framework and securing it firmly to the ground.

In the architecture of Ruong houses in Hue, the wooden truss system and frame are considered the core structural elements, bearing the load and supporting the entire house. The columns, beams, braces, and rafters are tightly connected through a wooden mortise and tenon system, ensuring exceptional durability over time.
